EULESS - Steve Lineweaver, who guided the Commerce Tigers to the 1999 Class 3A Division II state championship, was named the next head football coach at Euless Trinity.

Lineweaver confirmed the move to The Herald Banner Tuesday night after returning from the meeting of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District board of trustees, which approved the hiring by a unanimous vote.

"I don't want to say anything else until I talk to my kids in the Commerce program," Lineweaver said. He added that he planned to meet with the team sometime today.

A sign of what was going to happen was evident Tuesday afternoon in the CHS Fieldhouse. Lineweaver's desk in the coaches' office was clean except for a name plate he received during a playoff game and a legal pad.

Tuesday was also the day the University Interscholastic League announced its biannual realignment of all Texas high schools.

Lineweaver's resignation should go before the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees at its regular meeting next week.

"I wish best for him," said CISD board vice president Dick Latson, whose son Shane was a linebacker on the Tigers' 1997 state finalist team. "I hate to see him leave, but I understand it's a career move."

Lineweaver had a 83-14-2 record in seven seasons at Commerce. He also was an assistant coach at Trinity from 1976-85 and offensive coordinator at Southlake Carroll from 1985-1992 and has been a coach since 1968.

Commerce beat Sealy 17-10 in the 1999 state title game at Texas Stadium.

Lineweaver replaces Ed Hickman, who resigned in December after the HEB school district conducted an investigation into his behavior.
