North Lamar 3
COMMERCE -- Things were all too familiar for Commerce Friday night as the Tigers claimed the District 10-3A football championship with a convincing 21-3 win over North Lamar at Memorial Stadium.
Eddie Hines found familiar territory with three first half touchdown runs as the defending Class 3A, Division II state champions returned to their very familiar spot as the reigning district champion. Hines, who rushed for 178 yards on 29 carries, now has 24 touchdowns on the season.
And coach Terry Cron's Tigers should be familiar with the opening round of the playoffs next week as they will make an 11th straight appearance in postseason play. Commerce (8-2, 7-0 in district play) will take on Pilot Point in a Division II bI-district contest. Game time and site were not determined at press time.
North Lamar (5-5, 5-2) will also advance to bi-district as the Panthers will take on Gainesville in a Division I playoff opener next week.
The victory could prove costly for Commerce however, as the Tigers' starting fullback and linebacker left the game in the second quarter with a concussion. His status for next week is uncertain.
Commerce was held to 66 yards in the second half but the defense forced four turnovers as Brandon Rainbolt, Chad Hunter and Chris Winston all intercepted Smith. --
