Area players earn Class 3A all-state honors

Herald Banner staff report

A total of seven area football standouts were named to the Class 3A all-state team in the Honorable Mention category.

From state-bound Commerce, three Tigers were honored. Ryan Sienty, Chris Luckey, and Preston McDaniel were named to the Honorable Mention list. Royse City also placed three to the Honorable Mention honor roll: B.J. White, Lance Hays, and Joe Watkins. Rains' quarterback Tommy Potts rounded out the list of area picks.

The Commerce honorees will no doubt be introducing themselves to the 3A player of the year, linebacker Derek Curry of Sealy, on Saturday in the state playoff game at Texas Stadium. It will be the third time the two teams have met in the playoffs in the 1990's.

Sienty, the big Tiger fullback, gained yards on carries this year, scoring touchdowns. Luckey, the 5-11, 246 pound senior, was chosen as a defensive lineman, as was McDaniel, the 6-2, 222 senior. Both are tackles for the Tigers.

Royse City's B.J. White made the running back honorable mention list as a running back. White compiled 1,088 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns during the regular season. Lance Hays was selected from the Offensive End position. Hays averaged five catches per game for the Bulldogs. Joe Watkins, one of Royse City's leading scorers, was chosen to the all-state team from the linebacker position.

Rains' Tommy Potts was also named to the all-state honorable mention poll from his quarterback position. Potts also rushed for 1,054 yards on the year, scoring 15 touchdowns.

The APSE poll is based on regular-season performances by all players.
