NGC 7023 The Iris Nebula

NGC 7023 is a bright reflection nebula in the northern constellation of Cepheus. At its center is a magnitude 7.4 star that excites the gas of the nearby nebulosity into a glow. It is in a dusty region of the milky way and one can easily see the lack of stars around the nebula that are hidden behind interstellar dust clouds. Also notice the "hole" in the dust just right of the nebula where stars are seen.

This image is a composite of a 75 minute and 90 minute exposure on hypered Kodak PJ 400 film. They were done with the 12.5" f/7 Newt.
