M-97 The Owl Nebula

M-97 is a fairly large and bright planetary nebula in Ursa Major. It is magnitude 9.9 and 3.4 arc min in size, so only a few planetaries are larger and brighter. It is a fainter member of the Messier cataloged; however, and is a somewhat difficult visual target requiring modest aperture and dark skies.

This image is a cropped portion of a 90 minute and 110 minute composite on hypered Kodak PJ 400 film. They were made with my 12.5" f/7 Newtonian with a Nikon TC 14 1.4x telextender; effective focal length 3100mm at f/10.
