The Horsehead and NGC 2023

This is a close-up of the famous horsehead nebula. Actually it is a dark nebula classified as Barnard 33. Its silhouette is in front of the emission nebula IC 434. Also conspicuous in the image is the reflection nebula NGC 2023 at the bottom.  They are located in the constellation Orion and are just below the left star of Orion's belt Alnitak.

This image is a composite of two 120 minute exposures with the 12.5" f/7 Newtonian on hypered Kodak PJ 400 film. A Nikon 1.4x TC 14 teleconverter was used to yield an effective focal length of 3100mm at an f ratio of f/10.
