Alnitak and the Flame Nebula
The bright star Alnitak in Orion's belt is the star hopper's guide to the many objects in the Horse Head Nebula complex. Dominant in this image is the Flame nebula. Its nickname is obvious; its common designation is NGC 2024. To the upper middle and left portion of the image is the nebulosity associated with IC 434.
This image is a composite of two 60 minute exposures on hypered Kodak PJ 400 film. They were made with my 12.5" f/7 Newtonian.
